Downturn hurts men more than women?

Here’s a new way to slice and dice the gloomy recession blob that keeps creeping up on us all: Job losses are affecting more men than women.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics noted that U.S. women (aged 20 or more) gained 300,000 jobs in the period of November 2007 to April 2008.  Men lost nearly 700,000 jobs during that same time.

A BusinessWeek article explains, “Simply put, men have the misfortune of being concentrated in the two sectors that are doing the worst: manufacturing and construction. Women are concentrated in sectors that are still growing, such as education and health care.”

I guess it pays to be a metrosexual (to add another stereotype). Of course, the situation is more complex (and interesting) than that, so check out the article.

A new front in the Battle of the Sexes. Who knew?
